Become the Captain of Your Life: Reclaim Your Mind and Momentum
I don’t pretend to know how the human brain works. I know that it has evolved over 10s of thousands of years, if not 100,000 years. While the brain was evolving, day-to-day survival was a primary concern. The concept of the 21st century was incomprehensible.
Yesterday, I had my biggest win of the year. But at the end of the day, my mind could not relinquish the unfinished task I needed to address today. And I was in a deep funk.
I am told that it has to do something with survival programming that dates back 10s of thousands of years before man was the dominant force on the earth, and without this programming, the odds of survival were significantly reduced.
People who know more about the brain than me have created social media to make billions of dollars using that and other tricks to manipulate humanity for the sole purpose of selling advertisements – nothing to do with survival or taking care of myself.
This morning, while I was journaling, trying to figure out why I was in a deep funk, I was reminded to take a deep breath, look at where I came from, and celebrate the progress that I have made, or as Steve Jobs said in his Standford commencement speech, connect the dots.
And that has made all the difference.
I lost the funk, tackled the unfinished tasks, and had a great day.
I had taken my limited knowledge of how the brain is programmed and manipulated myself to be my Best Self.
So the next time you feel you have lost control of your life or realize your five-minute break to social media has turned into half an hour, take a deep breath, look at where you have come from, and connect the dots.
Use their tools against them. Become the captain of your life and not their product.
Stay hungry. Stay foolish.
